Important note for navigation systems
Buy a Vignette
In Austria, a vignette is required on the motorways. These are available as a 10-day, 2-month or yearly version. Stickable vignettes are available at most petrol stations and tobacco shops in Austria, also close to the border. Since 2018, you can also purchase the vignette digitally at www.asfinag.at - and do not need to stick it to your windscreen. Attention: since for consumer protection reasons a 14 day right of withdrawal applies from the date of purchase, the electronic vignette is only valid at the earliest from 18 days after an online purchase.
Please note:
- In some cases, additional tunnel fees or tolls may apply.
- Safety warning vests in the car are mandatory for each passenger!

Avoid waiting times at the border
Since police checks are not announced by their very nature, it is important to inform yourself about the current situation shortly before starting your journey. The website of the Austrian ASFINAG is always up-to-date and with a minute-by-minute display of the waiting times.
The app of the Austrian ASFINAG is also very practical and free of charge for all mobile phone operating systems, and provides the desired information.
Journey home to Germany
Border crossing Freilassing
Motorway junction Salzburg - A1 direction Vienna - motorway exit Salzburg Mitte - Freilassing ("A" B155/"D" 304) - B20 direction Piding/Bad Reichenhall
However, since this route is also announced as official alternate route and checks are occasionally carried out here as well, there may also be delays here.
Border crossing Marktschellenburg
Tauern motorway direction Salzburg - exit Grödig (Berchtesgaden) - B160 direction Berchtesgaden - border crossing Marktschellenberg (without controls!) B305 and B306 to Siegsdorf/Germany, take the A8 towards Munich
For info: Since summer 2019, however, this variant has been listed as an “official alternative route”.
Rossfeld-Panorama Road
If you have time to enjoy the landscape when you travel home to Germany, we recommend that you see the beautiful “Rossfeld-Panoramastrasse”, which is a toll road. The highest panoramic road in Germany leads visitors directly into the unique, high Alpine mountains of Berchtesgaden and flows into the B305 near Berchtesgaden. For this route, you can already leave the Tauern motorway in Hallein and reach it via the village of Bad Dürnberg (follow the signs).
